Match Focus: Battle of the Blues this Saturday
Posted: 9th September 2019
Bedford are back at home this Saturday for ‘Battle of The Blues’ against Welsh giants Cardiff Blues at Goldington Road (Kick Off 4pm).
In just the second match of the season, following Blues’ eight try victory over Cambridge, 50-24, Mike Rayer’s troops will be keen to set a marker for the season, ahead of Championship Cup action only a week later.
The pre-season fixture takes on even more significance for Bedford’s Director of Rugby, Rayer, who is an unquestionable legend of both clubs, playing 367 times for Cardiff before making 62 appearances as a player and 450 as DoR at Goldington Road.
Rayer will certainly not be underestimating the task at hand against the Pro14 side, following a disappointing mid-table finish last season the Welshmen will be targeting a return to the top of the standings and competing back at Europe’s top table.
John Mulvihill’s Cardiff are expected to name a strong side for their first competitive fixture of the new season with many stars set to grace the Bedford slope. In the Welsh capital’s first visit to the town since September 1998, we are looking forward to a humdinger! Team news to be released Friday.
